Camping with the Wild Things
A Wild Sleep Out

For those of you who want a kids' experience, whether you've got children with you or you're just a big kid yourself, this is the most amazing way to meet Australia's weird and wonderful wildlife.

This Wild Night Out is for all ages. (However, if you want a grown-ups only night out without kids, we do have some dates reserved just for adults with cottage accommodation.)

Do you love the idea of a night in the Australian bush, camping sounds cool, but you do want hot water and plumbing and a comfortable mattress? Walkabout Park's family sized safari tents, pitched in the bush alive with friendly wildlife, give you the chance to experience camping in comfort.

The Australian bush puts on an entrancing display of wild nature after dark. This program is jam packed with animal action, from meeting Walkabout Park friendly furry and scaly and spiky residents, to playing tug of war with the devils and spotlighting for wildlife in the trees and undergrowth.

Share a tent with your friends, pitched in a clearing in the gum trees around a huge campfire pit, and just a short walk from the showers and toilets. 4WD mattresses, sleeping bags, pillows and towels are all supplied, all you have to bring is your toothbrush.

When you wake with the kookaburras in the morning, don’t be surprised if there is a kangaroo outside your tent and an emu strolling past.

Wild Sleep Out
The Winter and Summer programs are the same, just the timings are different. This is so that you can enjoy the sunset and be at the right place at the right time to see the wildlife when it is at its most active just after dusk.

Although similar, there are two important differences between the Wild Sleep Out (tents) and the Family Wild Night Out (cottages). Guests staying at the campsite have dinner and breakfast included in their program, and (weather permitting) finish off the evening with Dreamtime stories and toasting marshmallows around the campfire.

Meet your ranger on the veranda at the visitor centre. Your ranger will take you back to the carpark to collect your gear, then to your tent where you can settle in, familiarise yourself with the layout of the campsite, look over the maps and guidelines for interacting safely with the animals, and say “Hi” to the friendly critters feeding in the late afternoon.

For late check-in, call (02) 43751100 to arrange entry.

Spkes, Scales, Feathers & Fur

Meet at the visitor centre from where your ranger will take you out on a walkabout adventure to meet some amazing spiky, scaly, feathery and furry creatures.

Head back to the visitor centre for some healthy snacks to keep everyone's energy levels up as dinner will be late. Help yourself to local fruit juice, crackers, trail mix and energy bars.

Spotlighting tour

As the sun goes down and the stars come out, head out with your ranger to play tug of war with the Tasmanian devils, then spy on the nocturnal wildlife. From frogs to flying foxes and bettongs to bandicoots, the bush is full of surprises. You never know what you will find.

Dinner and campfire (weather permitting)

After your ranger-led walkabout, head back to the campsite where a Big Aussie Sausage Sizzle feast with lamingtons and softdrinks will be waiting for you. Your ranger will light your campfire and demonstrate the traditional art of marshmallow toasting.

Free time to enjoy the bush at night

If you're not ready for bed you may want to take another walk around the animal loop, keeping the kids close, to see what other animals might be out and about in the trees and the bushes. We do put the campfire out so that it doesn't pose a risk to the bush, the animals, or  people.

Early breakfast

There's just enough time for a quick Aussie bush breakfast of toast, cereal, yoghurt and fruit at the visitor centre before your behind-the-scenes ranger-led morning adventure begins.

Morning behind the scenes

Go behind-the-scenes with your ranger for a very personal animal encounter before the park opens to the general public.

Breakfast, then explore the sanctuary or join in the public program of ranger-led activities

Return to the campsite to pack up your things so they are safe in your car, collect your activities schedule from reception, and join in the daily ranger-led activities and animal encounters that run throughout the day from 9:30am until 4pm.
