Sleep out where the Wild Things are

Cottage: $200 for first person. Add $50 for each additional adult and $25 for each additional child.

Do you love the idea of a night in the Australian bush, but you don’t really want to sleep rough? How about a cottage with all the comforts of home nestled in the bush alive with friendly wildlife? Share a cottage with your friends, your own private haven with everything you need. Open plan, fully equipped kitchen, en suite bathroom, fluffy bath towels, comfortable bed, hotel quality linen, ceiling fan and oil fin heater, dining suite, sofa and even a TV. When you wake with the kookaburras in the morning, don’t be surprised if there is a kangaroo on your veranda and an emu at the window.

The Australian bush puts on an entrancing display of wild nature after dark. Bring a torch so you can explore the tracks at night. You may want to add a ranger-led spotlighting tour for a program jam packed with animal action, from meeting Walkabout Park friendly furry and scaly and spiky residents, to playing tug of war with the devils and spotlighting for wildlife in the trees and undergrowth.

Tent: $120 for the first person. Add $20 for each additional person. Any age. If you would prefer a tent, click here to read about the 'comfortable camping under canvas' option.

What is an 'adult' or 'child'?

Wild Night Out for all ages. Whether you've got children with you or you're just a big kid yourself, this is the most amazing way to meet Australia's weird and wonderful wildlife. For adults who want a grown-ups only night out without kids, we do have some dates reserved with a minimum age 16.

Adult: Age 16 or over.

Child: Age 0 to 15. We do not have a minimum age as many 'zoo snooze' programs do, but you do pay for infants.

Add a ranger-led tour

Must be booked for everyone in your cottage. If, due to weather or sunset time or animal activity, there are any changes to scheduled times of activities, you will be told of these when you check in.

4:00pm Aboriginal Sites, Archaeology & Culture:
$100 for the first person. Add $50 for each additional person. Minimum age 16.

Add catering

Must be booked for everyone in your cottage. If anyone in your cottage has special dietary requirements, we recommend self-catering. Sausages are gluten free. See "What to expect: Meals" for what's on the menu.

Self-catering:
You are welcome to self-cater. Cottages have their own kitchen. Or you can get us to cater for you.

7:00pm Sausage Sizzle Dinner:

Early arrival and check-in:

Why it is so important that you pack light

As your cottage is inside the wildlife sanctuary where the animals roam freely, it would be too dangerous for the animals to let people drive their cars to their cottages, so be ready for a short walk (approximately 200 meters).

You will need to carry your gear to your cottage. Although you can pull wheeled cases part of the way, you will need to pick up your bags where the ground is bumpy.

We do not have porters. Although our rangers will help you whenever they can, the rangers are usually busy caring for the animals so may not be around to give you a hand.

Shortening the check-in process by pre-filling documents

If you would like to complete your check-in documents prior to arrival to shorten the check-in process, you can download the documents here. Just complete them and bring them with you.

What to expect: On arrival

Usual arrival and check-in time is between 4:30pm and 5:30pm, unless you have made other arrangements with us (see "Add an early or late check-in" above). We don't recommend an early check-in as part of the magic of a Wild Sleep Out is first meeting the animals at dusk. Most people prefer to arrive in the evening, then spend the next day getting to know the animals they met the night before. If you have arranged to arrive after 5:30pm when the gates are locked, you will need to phone us on 43751100 to get in.

When you arrive, take your luggage to reception to complete the check-in process and get your keys. Your ranger will give you a park map with a schedule of activities for the 2nd day of your visit. Most importantly, you will be given easy-to-follow safety information about the animals. This animal safety information is vital as you will be stepping into the animals' world.

Once you have the safety information and your map, you can take your luggage to your cottage and settle in. After that, you are free to wander around and start meeting the animals. If you have not booked a ranger-led tour, when you check in we will explain to you how to enjoy the park after dark, keeping in mind your and the animals' safety.

If you have booked a ranger-led tour, return to the veranda at the Visitor Centre 5 minutes before your tour is due to start. Your ranger will meet you there.

What to expect: Evening Tours

The 4pm Aboriginal Sites, Archaeology & Culture tour takes 1½ to 2 hours. This tour is designed for adults (minimum age 16). Follow the bush tracks along the ridgeline to ancient Aboriginal sites. Look back across the Calga valley to other important sites connected across the Cultural Landscape. Explore the lore concepts of The Dreaming, Creation Stories and Songlines. The reason we do not include younger children in the 4pm tour is because we cover complex concepts of lore, and there is not enough time to cover everything we do while 'translating' it for younger children. If you would like your younger children to have a similar experience, you may consider engaging a personal ranger.

The 6pm Animal Encounters & Spotlighting tour takes 1½ to 2 hours. Meet Walkabout Park’s friendly residents, then go spotlighting to spy on the animals as the bush comes alive at dusk. Play tug of war with the Tasmanian devils. Get up close and hands-on with Australia’s weird and wonderful wildlife. This tour is designed for all ages.

What to expect: Dinner

Your cottage has its own kitchen with cooking utensils, stove, microwave, toaster and kettle. Your pantry is stocked with Nescafe coffee, tea, sugar, 2% milk for coffee/tea, salt, pepper and spray-and-cook. Most guests bring along some easy to prepare fresh ingredients to make their own dinner and breakfast. We can't cater for special dietary requirements so, if our standard menu doesn't give you the variety you need, you are welcome to bring and prepare your own meals.

If you don't want to bother with shopping and cooking dinner, we can supply a sausage sizzle during the dinner break at around 7pm, including beef sausage sandwiches and sauce, apple pie and custard, and soft drink. The sausages are gluten free.

If you have booked the 6:00pm ranger tour, there will be a half-hour dinner break at around 7pm.

What to expect: Campfire

The campfire is part of the 6pm Animal Encounters and Spotlighting tour which finishes up with a campfire at around 8pm. Occassionally, because of extreme weather (e.g. if there are high winds or a total fire ban), we cannot go ahead with the campfire. However, this is very rare. When we do have a campfire, we supply the marshmallows for toasting and tell Dreamtime stories. You're welcome to relax around the campfire until bed time. We usually put the fire out at around 9:30pm.

What to expect: Breakfast

You have your own kitchen, so you can decide wether to have an early breakfast, or to sleep in. But if you want us to cater breakfast, this is served at 8am sharp so that anyone who has booked the morning tour can be finished and ready to go at 8:30am.

If we supply a continental 'bush' breakfast, this includes cereal, 2% milk, bread for toasting, spreads, cheese slices, raisin bread, yoghurt and orange juice.

What to expect: Morning Tour

The 8:30am morning Animals Behind the Scenes tour takes approximately 1 hour. Head out with your ranger, before the park opens to the public, to “access all areas”, going inside the animals’ camps where the public are not usually allowed to go. Meet the animal personalities of the park and make some very special friends. This tour is designed for all ages.

What to expect: Check-out and departure

Usual check-out time is 10am. Subject to availability, you can book a late check-out (4pm) so that you can continue to use your cottage throughout the day.

The fun continues after check-out time. If you don't want to leave, and you don't have to! Pick up your map with its schedule of ranger-led talks and tours and head out to see the animals and explore the bush tracks. You are welcome to stay until the park closes for the night at 5pm.

In the event of bad weather and if you have not heard from us, please call (02) 4375 1100 before 11am on the day of your booking to find out whether the program is going ahead.
